Wisconsin Supreme Court race recount may begin in a few weeks

It appears that there will be a recount, which would begin in May. No definite date has been established yet. Here’s what happens next:

By 4 p.m. Wednesday, municipal clerks must deliver all their materials to the offices of county clerks around the state.

By 9 a.m. Thursday, county boards of canvassers have to start meeting and making an official report on ward by ward vote totals. Those reports will be sent to the Accountability Board.

The Accountability Board technically has until May 15 to certify the results, but Kennedy said a recount could begin as soon as Tuesday.

Here is more information on the timing and procedures of a recount:

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — It may take more than a month before any recount would even start in the state Supreme Court race that remains too close to call.

The Government Accountability Board has until May 15 to complete its canvas of the vote. No date has been set for the board to canvas the vote, which is dependent upon when the counties submit their results to GAB.

All 72 counties must begin to canvas the vote no later than 9 a.m. Thursday. The law gives them until 11 days after the election to submit those results to GAB.

Once the GAB completes its canvas of the vote, candidates have three days to request a recount.

GAB has a Recount Manual (PDF).
